Entertainers are using their celebrity to become fashion entrepreneurs, some of them, like Puffy, have been successful at it. They will not leave anytime soon, but you have to wonder why writers continue to talk about the idea that Tom Ford will make it in Hollywood.

Tom Ford had no formal training and stumbled upon his fashion genius like some idiot savant, absorbing what he could deduct from what is out there and adding his own personality and energy, the result were ideas that were unlike anything that Gucci has seen before. Once he put Gucci and the parent company on a very different level, artistically and financially, there was little that the skeptics could say about his position at the company. People were not just interested in Gucci again, they were damned near obsessed.

After 14 years Tom has stepped down, made way for another creative director to join Gucci's ranks, and wants to get into Hollywood. However, is the money any better in Hollywood? Fashion is getting overcrowded, as any one in good standing with venture capitalists can start their own label, it appears. Can Hollywood take Tom Ford farther than he could have even imagined, as a designer?

Think about it, as a designer you spend 10 years working under someone else. Then you spend another 10 years putting good ideas into clothing that purists complain fall apart in the washer. If you are fortunate to make it another 10 years after that, you may or may not have the celebrity and power to build a company that lasts. Many companies close their doors or simply fall apart. Designers like Lauren and Hilfiger that were on top of the world 10 years ago now simply exist. Klein sold out to Phillips-Van Huesen. People are more interested in the new Abercrombie stores than they are singular labels or designers.

If times have changed, and the writing is on the wall, it may be a good thing that Ford left when he did. He left when he was on top, before things started going downhill, and the press would have anything bad to say about him. If nothing else signifies, and describes this first decade of the new millennium, it is reinvention, and the idea that a job is simply a vehicle to take you from point a to point b, rather than a career. Spreading yourself thin, not because you are a renaissance man, or a man of many hats, but because there is more money to be made doing so.

Tom Ford accomplished what he there to do at Gucci and more. Some may hate the way that he did it, or even the fact that he was somewhat of an outsider to begin with. Then again, some of the best ideas and the biggest turnarounds in American businesses have come from outsiders that can provide something that purists cannot. The only thing you can really take away from Tom Ford's career at Gucci is the idea that you should consistently push ahead, rather than make yourself too comfortable with what you are doing now. That is something that we all can value from, regardless of how successful we are at what we are doing.

For many women, the fashion and beauty industry has taught us how to be thin and the value of a slim figure. While it is not a debate that a healthy body is usually one that is within a moderate weight, there are women who continue to live as a plus size woman and enjoy every aspect of it.

As a plus size woman, it is important to embrace the beauty of who you are. Creating a positive self image, at any size, is simple with a few techniques. Using body language, smiling often and wearing trendy clothing fit to your body type, will go a long way in obtaining the respect and recognition deserving of a person with a beautiful personality, regardless of weight.

While we continue to live in a society where appearance matters, it is important for the plus size woman to embrace her beauty and accent her physical features in addition to her personality features. Trendy clothes, in proper fit to your body type, will provide a great improvement in not only the way you feel but also in the way others perceive you.

In addition to an improved fashion appeal, plus size women can also improve their personal bodily image through simply body language changes. Focusing on stature, working to stand straight and tall, walking with intent and speaking clearly and confidently, are all measures the plus size women can pursue to improve bodily image.

Using fashion trends and welcoming body language, plus size women send a message of confidence and grace. From this, those in our society who generally have thoughts of ill will toward plus size women will begin to create a different impression.

However, this is not to say that plus size women need approval by society. They absolutely do not. With many fashion designers catering to the plus size women, women of all sizes begin to feel more confident in who they are without regard to the acceptance of society. Be that woman. Strive to live your life on your terms and not on the terms of others. Work to reduce your need to constantly feel the need for approval by your peers. You do not have to please everyone; only please yourself.

If, however, you are a plus size woman and seek to lose weight, be sure to do it in an environment where you are offered support without criticism. Making weight loss and fitness a joint venture will go along way in supporting you through the process while avoiding criticism with your not-so-successful attempts. Remember, being a plus size woman is not a curse. Acquiring a healthy weight, for your body type, is a 50/50 battle with your mind. If you are comfortable with whom you are, mentally, you'll find great satisfaction in your activities of daily living at any weight.

There's a great deal of misconception among the general public and those who work outside of the fashion world that the fashion business is a superficial industry. The media and movies are partly to blame for these attitudes and beliefs. If you've watched the movie,The Devil Wears Prada, or the TV sitcom, Ugly Betty, you probably think that all fashion editors are catty and all fashion industry people care about are outward appearances. Although this may be true to some degree, for the most part, there are people in the industry who take their job seriously and can be just as down-to-earth as your average girl-next-door.

Here are just a couple of questions I've read or heard about the topic of fashion and the fashion industry:

Can people actually have intelligent conversations about fashion? The answer to that is a resounding "Yes!" There are many issues going in the industry outside of which celebrity wore what on the red carpet or who is on the cover of Vogue this month. There are fashion designers who are making history from with innovative designs.

Can people make a difference in this world by working in the fashion industry? There is always the opportunity to make a difference in people's lives no matter what you do. Coco Chanel gave women stylish and chic clothing to wear to work. Stella McCartney is using her power to fight for animal rights. Ralph Lauren has donated eco-friendly "denim" insulation to the Habitat for Humanity. People have to remember that fashion is a business just like any other business in this world and there's certainly money to be made in the fashion industry. We all wear clothes, right?

Is the fashion industry to blame for the skinny model debate? For those of you who don't know, the industry decided to ban skinny models from the runway in some countries. Here in the U.S. the Council of Fashion Designers of America set "guidelines" for models to follow, but they still have yet to enforce any rules like Spain or Brazil has. However, to answer the question posed, I think that the industry is partly to blame because there is a great deal of pressure from agents and fashion designers for models to look a certain way. The idea is that clothing looks better on tall and skinny models. However, on the other hand, models do not have to succumb to that pressure.

As the editor of a fashion blog, I've been in contact with fashion bloggers all over the world, public relations people in New York, as well as insiders in the fashion industry. I've learned so much about the business and like I said before, it's just like any industry. You have the good people and then you have those who give it a bad name. One thing is for sure, though. We'll always need fashion in our lives!

There is actually something called FDCI. Fashion Design Council of India. If you insist on knowing the expansion.

Its not terribly clear whether it is something set up by designers to "institutionalise" their profession, or whether it is something the government has set up , in a sort of semi interested way, (if such a thing is at all possible); but the person heading it right now, is a retired IAS (Indian Administratice Service) lady officer, with a huge amount of experience in handicrafts, tourism, and setting up of the National Institutes of Fashion Technology (NIFT) all over India.

For a couple of years now, newpapers get occasionally slavishly addicted to writing about the annual FDCI/Lakme fashion shows. There is always some fight going on between Mumbai and Delhi designers which is highlighted. Reams of paper are devoted to how some Page 3 types, are leaving everything they are doing, to fly urgently to the concerned metros, so they can sit in the first row (reserved, if you please), wearing, what my mother would have called "shameless" clothes, and an expression that would make people think they are listening to a debate on the nuclear CTBT. These same people, change into more strange outfits every so many hours; and why not? Even something as sensible as NDTV has a fawning correspondent reporting on the appearance of the various queen bees and king moths, and their clothes and drinks.

All this for what ?

There is this longish stage sort of jutting out into the audience. Every designer has his or her special music playing. The audience is seated at a strategically planned lower level, probably at the ankle level of the parading models. I dont know about the FDCI, but when I was in elementary school, this kind of thing during any Annual Day would have got the parents into an uprising and the principal would have been fired. Ok. Its only children. The audience is only parents. But sitting at that level, and by default looking up someones skirt, is simply not done.

This is, of course, a non-issue at the FDCI. We're globalising, and these faltu things dont bother us.

And so what do you say about a girl, walking across the stage at an angle of 120 degrees to the horizontal; several degrees of amazing freedom created by pencil thin stilletoes; Her dress actually resembles a giant bib, (see the picture above ) like my son used to wear, when he sat in the swing hung on the balcony door, to eat his porridge. Except he wore a t-shirt inside; its not clear whether she wears anything inside, or not.

Then there is this lady who walks on to the stage next, wearing what reminds me of my grand uncle's pajamas. Except she has combined them with what i would define as my grandmothers saree blouse with only one shoulder and NO back. What is totally miraculous is the pajamas are worn BELOW the hips. And there appears to be a diamond stuck on to the navel. No wonder the lady has to walk with so much simple harmonic motion of the hips just to allow the pajama to stay in place. If she stops, they may slide, and she may have, what is these super globalised days, we call a wardrobe malfunction; my mother would have said that someone deserved a tight slap.

Sometimes these models appear wearing what looks like a pure balloon inspired dress. You need , around you, an empty space of at least 3 feet on all sides . Some of these dresses have no shoulders. Some only have sleeves, but no shoulders. The thing to do is to come fashionably in covered with your teenage brothers school blazer . These days its called a "shrug". You come on to the stage, give disdainful looks to a section of the audience, twirl, there is a clash of cymbals, and you remove the shrug; look ma, no shoulders !

They dont even let the saree alone .

Without the FDCI/designers et al, India has had a variety of saree draping styles, traditionally enjoyed by the women , over several hundred years. There is the Kerala Half Saree, the typical Tamil Nadu nine yard draping, the Maharashtrian nine yard grace, the various ways a six yard saree is draped, Marathi, Gujarati, Bengali, Marwari and what have you. All these styles have evolved with the emancipation of women from that particular region. A way of draping when you maintain the housekeys (bengali), a way of draping in front of elders, a way of draping and tucking in when busy with some physical work, and a way of draping when feeling cold....

I remember from my childhood, two distinct ways the 9 yard saree was draped. One way was favoured by the more active ladies, who cycled to work, and were PT teachers in schools etc. The other method was patronised by those more homebound, with less strenuous lifestyles. There is a third style patented by the Koli women of Mumbai; a sensible, no nonsense style that allowed you to comfortably work in water and land, where you needed to rush here and there, picking fish from heaps, sortng, loading, travelling in a hurry to the market through crowded trains etc.

Todays designers have no concept of Utility of dress. Precious stones are stitched on to whole sarees , which are instrinsically made longer in length, and thinner in texture. The sarees are wound several times (more than normal) before the paloo is flung over the shoulder. ( I cant see myself running to catch a bus in this. And I would discourage anyone trying to do that with so many precious stones attached) . Poor me; I still dont believe it when the salesman says its 6 yards, and make him measure it. I shudder at the lenghth I will need to measure here.

The other trick is to make it look as if no blouse is worn. This is achiieved by having straps on blouses. And then casually allowing your open hair to fall over it. Sort of a cross of Meena Kumari and Princess Diana. Sometimes, the purpose of the palloo is done away with altogether. How else will anyone see the pearl beadwork on the non trivial section of the blouse ? Models march across the stage holding their palloos widely away from their torso.

(Take a deep breath. Count up to 10. Temper under control). 20 years ago, someone would have thought she is in the process of removing the saree. No nice girls did that on stage. Today nice is a bad word.

Can you see youself going to work in your uncle's pajamas, and grandmother's saree blouse? Will a balloon dress put you at a superior advantage getting into bus no 392 going to Ghatkopar ? Will a thigh level frock combined with skin colored tights be ideal wear in Central railway second class ladies bogey? How do you feel about squeezing your way to the front of the bus (trying to get off) during the 7 pm rush hour, wearing a stomach skin displaying top on low rise jeans ? And do you dare to complain if you get advertantly or inadvertantly pinched in the process?

Is that off-the-shoulder dress going to be dangerous healthwise, given that you are standing in the doorway of a ladies compartment, half out of the door, and not likely to get a place to enter in till your station comes? Do you think the strategically placed slit at the back of your knee length skirt is a great aid for climbing into buses when several people behind you urge you to hurry up in cast the bus starts moving ? And why crib about the staring, observant person (in the seat next to where you stand, wearing your smart short top, displaying your considerable midriff) as you hang on to the oscillating overhead starps , on you way to college?

Somehow, in the effort at promoting originality, the individuality has been lost.

The question is who is all this for, and who is going to wear these clothes. And is this what we teach at the National Institutes of Fashion Technology?

If you're looking for a bargain and live in the Los Angeles area, the LA Fashion District, is the place to find trendy yet one-of-a-kind pieces that you won't be able to find in a regular shopping mall. The bonus is that the goods you'll find in the Fashion District are usually dirt cheap.

Santee Alley is one section of the Fashion District and probably the best area to find the real deals. Its name comes from its location within the 90-block District where it is located on Santee with cross streets that include Main and Los Angeles streets. Although the entire Fashion District will offer deals, Santee is where shoppers will find the most bargains.

The District is open Monday through Sunday. However, the best day to go is on Saturday because many of the stores that are only open as wholesalers during the week will open their doors to the public on Saturdays. Sundays are generally a little more quiet as many of the shops are closed for the day. General hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., but if you're looking at a specific store, call to figure out the exact times ahead of going.

The best strategy for Santee Alley is to go early especially if you are going on a Saturday. Even if you decide to go around 10 a.m., it is still very crowded and by noon, it's packed.

Make sure to wear walking shoes and clothing that is comfortable because you will be doing a lot of walking. Stores are everywhere, row after row and if you want to be up to the challenge of sifting through racks and aisles of jewelry and clothing, you'll want to make sure you are comfortable enough to do so.

If you are going to bring a purse, make sure it is not too bulky and allows you easy access to your money. At the same time, make sure it is something that you have complete control over. While the city has made attempts to clean up the area, don't make yourself an easy target for thieves that thrive on the crowds and unsuspecting "tourist" shoppers. Many stores will accept credit cards for a minimum purchase amount and some stores even offer ATM machines. However, you should take into consideration the fact that cash is king in this area. Ultimately, it is just easier to bring cash and do your business with it.

In terms of parking, there are parking lots in Los Angeles. Look for one that charges a flat rate rather than by the hour. Most have flat rats anyways during the weekends. Try to pick one that is one the outskirts of Santee Alley so that you don't end up having to drive through the crowds of pedestrians walking to and from stores.

In the main section of Santee, jewelry stores are everywhere. You can usually find merchandise sometimes 75 percent off the retail label you'll see in stores. In fact, the sticker price on most items is not usually the price you'll pay. In many of the jewelry stores, they tend to offer large percentages off the price every day. The jewelry selection varies from trendy, to traditional. You will find whatever you are looking for whether it be for a dressy event or something to go with an everyday outfit.

The area is also a great place to pick up a purse. There are tons of stores with designer knock-offs but there are also an amazing selection of stores with original pieces at prices that can range from $10 and up.

In terms of clothing, there are both men and women's wear in Santee Alley. However, women's wear tends to dominate. In many stores, you can find fully lined items, designer jeans and other finds for under $20. A recent trip found excess Express jeans marked at $10. The only thing is that merchandise moves quickly and you are not guaranteed to see the same things in the stores a week later.

One thing to keep in mind with this area is that dressing rooms are not the norm in many stores. So, purchase clothing with caution and know the store policy because many do not do returns or exchanges.

Other deals in this area include evening wear. A lot of people purchase their prom dresses at Santee where some vendors sell racks of dresses priced at around $20 each - and these aren't pieces that look like they're $20 either. These are fully lined dresses with beading detail in satins and various other fabrics.

You can easily spend a whole day here. However, it can be overwhelming and if you want to beat the traffic, it is best to leave by the early afternoon. So, happy shopping.

Blogging is a big part of any online business, but can be especially effective in the ever-changing world of fashion and trends in clothing and accessories. A regularly updated blog can give your customers much needed information about what you have to offer at your fashion ecommerce website. It can also let them know about fashion sales, special offers and give general clothing advice. A blog is a great idea for your fashion ecommerce website. Here are several things that you should blog about in order to intrigue your readers: Trends and Fashion Magazines One thing any fashion blog should have is information about the popular trends in clothing and accessories. You can offer examples of high-fashion items from your own ecommerce line. You can also blog about what the fashion magazines are saying will be hot for the next season, or what celebrities are wearing. Whatever hot fashion trend you blog about, make sure you can tie it in easily to your ecommerce fashion website product line. How to Build an Outfit Offering suggestions on outfit choices is a great thing to blog about on a fashion ecommerce website. You can even include eye-catching graphics of your fashion product line and tell customers and blog visitors how to match colors, styles, and accessorize any outfit.  Special Website Sales Of course, with any business blog, one of the best things to post a blog entry about is your ecommerce website’s up and coming sales and special offers. Make sure your visitors and existing customers know in advance if there are special sales coming up. Some great sale ideas for a fashion website are “buy one t-shirt, get one 50% off,” and offers of free accessories with the purchase of a shirt or jeans. New Fashion Products Besides announcements about sales, you should also include information about any new products or fashion product lines you have coming out. This is especially important as the seasons change. If you have a new line of tops coming out for Spring, or bathing suits for the Summer, they should be announced early in your blog to encourage maximum sales. Your ecommerce fashion website can be helped through blog posting. Regular updates on fashion tips, special sale announcements, and other great clothing and accessory information will increase customer comfort. The better your customers feel about your ecommerce website, the more they will buy from you. Blog posting is hugely popular for sharing of ideas and marketing purposes. It can be an excellent tool to promote and embellish your fashion ecommerce website as well.

Cajun cooking is a staple in Lewisville, Texas, though there are only two restaurants in the area. The first is Razzoo’s Cajun Cafe at 1990 S. Stemmons Freeway and the other one is Johnny G’s at 1425 Justin Road. Take it from me, nothing beats good Cajun cuisine.

Razzoo’s has been in town for several years and is a chain restaurant. Featured items include nice selection of Cajun classics like gumbo and blackened salmon. The walls are graced with fishing nets, and various items like old tires, and such; you will see something different every time you visit. The food is fresh and spicy and there is always enough to take some home, which is the Cajun tradition.  You don’t have to have fish, or crawfish, or even gator; many people order the chicken, which comes grilled, fried or blackened. All this won't cost you an arm and a leg either, two can eat here for around thirty dollars.

Johnny G’s is a new restaurant in Lewisville. It is a rather unique blend of Cajun and Italian cooking. The shrimp pasta is something special, as is the blackened fish. The ambience is different as well, the tables are wooden picnic style and some of the walls are covered with galvanized aluminum. There are pictures of New Orleans, and the bayou all over the walls. But the best thing about Johnny G’s is that Mama G, prepares an Italian Buffet every Wednesday night, with the best all you can eat pasta and sauces in town.

Razzoo’s Cajun Cafe

Johnny G’s

So, if you are in the mood for some real down home cooking that reminds you of New Orleans, check out these two establishments. You will not regret your decision.

Did you know over seven million Americans will suffer from food poisoning this year? I'm sure you have heard about food poisoning from restuarants on the news, but did you know you can also get food poisoning from your own kitchen? Did you know that your toilet is cleaner than your sink? Hard to believe? It's true. You could be harming you and your family and not even know it. The most serious types of food poisoning are due to bacteria. The more bacteria that is present, the more likely you are to become ill. Bacteria multiplies pretty fast. Bacteria needs moisture, food, warmth and time to spread. People with low resistance to diseases are more likely to get food poisoning since their immune system can't fight it off as easily as someone who is healthy. Pregnant women, babies, and elderly people are the ones who are more at risk of getting food poisoning.

Please follow the tips below to keep you and your family safe.

- Buy foods that are in good condition. Don't buy red meats that has a brownish tint to it.
- Don't buy red meats that have a brownish tint to it.
- Don't buy can goods that are dented, cracked, or bulging at the top.
- Food in the refrigarator should be cold to the touch. Keep your Refrigarator set at forty degrees or below.
- Food in your freezer should be rock hard.
- Don't thaw out meat on counters at room temperature. Instead thaw your meat in your refrigarator
- Throw away meat that has been sitting at room temperature for more than two hours.
- Pour bleach down your kitchen sink every other day to kill the bacteria that sticks to the drain.
- Wash your cutting board well. Wash it first with hot soapy water and then with bleach.
- Don't eat raw eggs. Raw cake mix and raw cookie dough can cause food posioning due to the raw eggs.
- Wash your dirty dishes right away and then let them air dry.
- After handling raw meat, be sure to wash your hans with a sanatizer.
- Never serve your cooked food with the utensils you used to cook them with.

Following these tips can greatly reduce your chances of getting food posioning. Although some of these maybe basic common sense, some people just don't know. I know I have left dirty dishes in the sink all day at times and wash them that night. I've sat my meat in a bowl with a lid to thaw it. So even though they are somewhat common sense things to do, not everyone knows about food posioning. The symptoms of food poisoning can last for days at a time. The Symptoms include abdominal pains, diarrhoea, vomiting, nausea and fever. The symptoms usually come on suddenly, but can occur several days after eating contaminated food. They will sometimes will get better on their own, but often people have to visit the doctor for treatment.

A quesy tummy may indicate overindulgence but it might also mean a foodborne illness. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, 76 million Americans suffer such an illness each year. About 350,000 of these are hospitalized and 5,000 die. Foodborne illnesses, often called "food poisoning", can be serious and include such variants as salmonella, listeria, and staphylococococcus. All are caused by bacteria which often multiply when food is not handled in a safe manner. Those most at risk for foodborne illnesses include senior citizens, children under the age of ten, pregnant women, and those with a weak immune system (HIV patients, transplant patients, or those recovering from other serious illness).Symptoms of food poisoning can include an upset stomach, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, headaches, pus or blood in bowel movements, extreme exhaustion and even fever. Onset can occur as early as twenty minutes after eating a tainted food product or take as long as six weeks to appear. Most commonly, foodborne illnesses affect the digestive system in one to three days after ingesting the culprit. And, most cases are mild and can be treated at home. Rest and plenty of liquids are often enough to speed recovery but if symptoms are acute or worsen, it's best to consult a physician.

Simple steps can be taken to minimize and prevent the possibility of foodborne illness. The first rule is to keep clean and this means everything from the food preparer's hands to utensils, countertops, and serving plates. Anyone preparing food should wash their hands first with warm, soapy water. All utenils used in food preparation should be clean. When dealing with raw meat products, keep the utensils, i.e. knives, cutting boards, turning forks, etc, seperate from those used with other foods. Wash thoroughly after handling raw meat. Store fresh meats for no more than 1-2 days in the refrigerator before use and consult consumer guidelines for the limits on freezing meat products.

If heading out on a picnic or cookout in an outdoor location, be sure to store raw meats in a seperate cooler from beverages, salads, and other foods. If hand washing facilities are not available, bring along sanitizing hand wipes or moist towellettes to use after handling raw meats.

At home or away, be sure to check all meats to insure that they are cooked to a safe temperature. Failing to fully cook meat can allow dangerous bacteria to breed and cause illness. Although cases of E-coli have diminished in recent years, e-coli outbreaks can be deadly. Other illness including salmonella and listeria can also begin with undercooked meat. Beef - including hamburgers - should be cooked to at least 160 degrees Farenheit. Poultry should reach at least 170 degrees and pork should register 180 degrees or more. Hot dogs - although sold fully cooked - should be cooked until they reach 165 degrees. Insert a meat thermometer into the center of meat and leave for 30 seconds for an accurate reading. Meat thermometers are available in most discount stores, hardware stores, kitchen specialty shops and even many supermarkets at nominal cost. Remember that no matter how experienced the cook, it is impossible to judge whether meat is done by appearance alone.

Avoid transferring cooked meat to a platter that held the raw product. Do not use the same cooking utensils unless these have been washed in hot, soapy water.

A standard in food safety is to keep hot foods hot, cold foods cold. Refrigerators should be set to 40 degrees Farenheit. Higher temperatures can allow bacteria to grow. If unsure about the temperature in a home refrigerator, invest in a thermometer to gauge the exact temperature. When transporting foods in cooler, make sure that it is an insulated cooler. Pack foods in several inches of ice or ice packs. Replensish as needed to maintain a cold temperature.

When temperatures are below 90 degrees, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) reccommends that food not be left out - at room or outside temperatures - for any longer than two hours. When temperatures soar above 90, an hour or less is the limit. This is because bacteria grows most rapidly between 90 and 100 degrees.Bacteria in room temperature foods can double every twenty minutes.

Foods that require extreme caution include mayonaise based products such as potato or macroni salads. These foods tend to break down and allow bacteria to breed quicker than other products.

Cleanliness, frequent hand washing, safe temperatures, and common sense are the key to preventing most foodborne illnesses. Prevention IS the best medicine for these illnesses which can range from mild to severe.

Believe it or not, Which? Magazine and The London Telegraph have reported results of a study undertaken by the former which indicated that organic baby food is less healthy than previously believed.

The report showed that iron content was low in organic baby food; too low, argued the Which? piece. In addition, under current legal guidelines dictating the composition of baby food labeled "organic," the addition of iron is prohibited. As a result, commercially prepared organic products contain some twenty percent less iron, thereby implying that baby will need to consume twenty percent more to get the daily recommended allowance of the mineral.

Some mass-produced organic baby food products have been found to be oversaturated, causing a reduction in other nutrients as well. And just because those additives are natural doesn't mean they're good for your baby.

Also brought to the attention of the consumer was the danger in parental complacency regarding organic snack foods. Because the restrictions regarding food designed for those over one year in age are significantly loosened, sodium and sugar contents increase. Indeed, because of their well-known characteristics as flavor enhancers, these two ingredients can easily be abused by an organic production company wanting their food to be as tasty as possible.

Of course, one consideration must be made when looking over the Which? survey results is that all products studied had one thing in common: They were all products.

The fact of the matter is that, ultimately, should you want ultimate control over what and how much your baby eats, you have no choice but to make it yourself, plain and simple.

Organic baby food must be prepared at home from organic fruit and vegetables (and, if you are comfortable with the source, meat products) selected by you. Fresh food - absolutely not frozen, even if it happens in your own freezer - contains the maximum amounts of nutrition. It is also believed by some that creation of food at home inspires good habits in young children, who do not gain such an appetite for junk food.

Should you find feeding your baby commercially-produced organic food, there is little cause for worry. There is, however, great cause for reading labels and researching. Remember that baby can't read and you can. Do so until it becomes habit, and you baby can receive all the benefits of organic baby food.

Undertaken at about the same time as the Which? survey was an article appearing in "Coronary and Diabetic Care in the United Kingdom," 2004 edition. Working with commercially-available organic baby food, Policy Project Coordinator James Cleeton confirmed all that organic food adherents already know. The piece stated that an organic diet reduces intake of toxins; eliminates intake of genetically modified organisms; nearly eliminates intake of additives, preservatives and coloring; and increases vitamin, mineral and nutritive intake. An organic baby food diet may also, concluded the study, reduce the chances of heart ailments, cancer, allergies and hyperactivity.

Studies and statistics aside, the most effective tool in the fight to keep your baby's diet clean and organic is your mind. The importance of knowing what goes in your baby's mouth cannot be understated, and in today's world lay more potentially dangers in the grocery aisles than ever before. A little education can go a long way. And remember, organic baby food all means simply a happier and healthier baby.

Food is a big issue on a farm. You need to feed the animals, so you have to grow food, which often feeds the family as well. Then there's all the processing of food that has to be done to store it. When it comes to feeding the farm animals, though, many farmers could be overlooking a few resources in their own home town.

Ever wonder what happens to outdated food from grocery stores? Food stores throw out tons and tons of food every year because the expiration date has passed without anyone buying the products. Since most people aren't interested in purchasing food that's gone out of date, stores simply throw the bakery goods, meats, cheeses, and other groceries into the dumpster.

In reality, some of these foods are still good - at least for pets and farm animals. Many products have a date stamped which says "Best when used by...", meaning the product is its freshest and best-tasting before that date. Many of these products are still perfectly fine for feeding farm animals.

Talk to some of the local grocers to see if you can pick these throwaways up rather than letting them get hauled to the dump. Many of the managers will give you these items for free if you'll come and load them on a specific date, usually once a week or every two weeks.

Another place that throws away massive quantities of food is a restaurant. The foods left over on plates are scraped into a trash can before being placed in the dishwasher. Cooks often cut away bones, fat and such, too, while they're preparing orders. These foods are thrown into the dumpster at night, but many managers will allow farmers to take the foods home if they pick the garbage bags up at the end of each shift, or each night, depending upon how often they throw it out. Call some of the restaurants in your home town to see if you can scavenge some of their throwaways for your farm animals. It can amount to quite a bit of food over a period of time.

Bakeries throw out hundreds of loaves of bread, buns, cakes, pies and other items. These food items are perfect for pigs, especially, since they'll eat just about anything. Bakeries usually check stock once a week and remove outdated items from the store. Phone area bakeries to see if they will allow you to pick the foods up for your animals.

Schools also throw away quite a lot of food. On the first day of school, check with the cafeteria manager to see if you can haul away uneaten food. They generally just scrape trays into a trash can and take it to the dumpster, so they shouldn't have any problem with giving it to you if you ask.

It takes a huge amount of food to take care of a farm full of animals. Of course, you'll still have to buy feed but the scrap foods can help you stretch the budget. Other sources to consider are farm and garden markets that sell fruits and veggies, or sidewalk cafes that usually have plenty of leftover, half-eaten baked goods. Food scraps should be used immediately and you should never give molded or rotted foods to animals.

Among all of the wonderful and memorable milestones your baby reaches, one of the most exciting is starting him on solid foods. Depending on what your pediatrician recommends, babies can start eating solids anywhere from 4 to 6 months of age, and rice cereal seems to be the top choice of first foods to introduce to your little one.

When my son turned 5 months old, I started feeding him rice cereal, followed by oatmeal, yellow veggies, green veggies, and then fruits. I waited the suggested five days in between introducing new foods to watch for allergic reactions but was always so excited and ready to see how he would like the next new flavor. He took to all of them, with the exception of strained peas, like a fish to water.

During this time, my best friend sent me a copy of the book, Super Baby Food, by Ruth Yaron and it quickly became my baby food bible. This book contains everything you need to know about feeding your baby and toddler. It includes suggestions as to what to feed your baby during each month of his first year, amounts, temperature, and much more to ensure your baby is receiving proper nourishment. This book also gave me an abundance of tips and ideas for making my son homemade baby food and quick meals and snacks that we could both enjoy.

Now, I am not the kitchen-wiz, Martha Stewart-esque type of mom, so at first I was a bit daunted by the thought of making baby food. I imagined myself covered head to toe in spinach and sweet potatoes while my steamer and blender worked overtime, but I was pleasantly surprised at how quick and easy it really was.

I had been feeding my son Nature's Own organic baby food at the time I got the book, and he was enjoying it immensely as both nutrition and a facial masque! So, I decided to continue using all of the flavors that Nature's Own carries and that I would make homemade baby food in flavors that didn't already come in jars. I set up my rice/veggie steamer and cooked asparagus, broccolli, cauliflower, bell peppers, zucchini, kale, edamame, beets, and pumpkin, pureed them in the blender and poured each into ice cube trays. After they had frozen, I would transfer the veggie cubes to freezer bags, and voila homemade goodness! And all this would take me less than 20 minutes for about two weeks worth of veggies.

Now that my son is a toddler and eating chunky foods, I continue to implement a lot of tips from Super Baby Food to ensure that he is getting the best nutrition possible. I still steam and puree some veggies when he is going through a "no green food" stage so that I can hide them in his quesadillas or pasta sauce, and I also like to add nutritious supplements to his foods. For example, in his morning bowl of oatmeal I will add fruit, and flaxseed meal which is an excellent source of Omega-3's and lignins.

When I give him yogurt, I like to add extra fruit, mashed tofu for added protein, oat bran or wheat germ, and molasses which is high in calcium, iron, and potassium. I tend to stay away from pre-flavored yogurts since they have added sugar, and buy plain which is then sweetened by the fruit and molasses. Stonyfield Farms makes an organic yogurt for babies, Yo-Baby, which comes in fruit and vanilla flavors, so I will use that at times as well. For his veggies, rather than use butter, I like to add some olive oil and a dash of kelp powder which is a good source of iodine and promotes thyroid health.

We owe it to our children to give them the best start in life, and fueling their little bodies properly is essential. There are a plethora of wonderful books available that list healthy meal ideas, tips for making homemade baby food, and more. Super Baby Food happened to be my favorite and I recommend it without hesitation.
